Two Victims Named in the Ivy League School Shooting as Police Continue Hunt for Perpetrator.

Both young individuals who lost their lives in the weekend's violent attack in Providence were being remembered Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their assailant continued following the discharge by local law enforcement of the sole person of interest in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

The student Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was remembered as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, as stated by the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.

Her role included the vice-presidency of Brown’s division of the College Republicans organization, the group said. Karoline Leavitt also expressed condolences online, stating: “Words cannot express. Keeping in mind her kin and peers, especially her parents.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the renowned school, his family confirmed.

Umurzokov’s identity was verified by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and helping people,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a memorial statement.

The Shooting Incident

Nine more persons were wounded in the weekend shooting in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.

Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a man aged 24 detained in a raid at a hotel about around 27 kilometers from the campus earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“A perpetrator remains free,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you need to change course and pursue a different angle, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”

Ongoing Concerns

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate fresh anxiety for our community”.

The gunman began shooting inside a lecture hall in the building on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a handgun, a law enforcement official reported to the Associated Press.

Law enforcement that searched the hotel found two firearms and magazines when the individual was arrested, as was reported.

Those Hurt

Of the nine hurt, a single scholar was allowed to go home, said Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.

A private school, a private K-12 school in the city of Durham, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

More Condolences

Tributes were paid to Cook at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was an incredible light in that institution as well.”

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “Ella was known for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she served her chapter and other students,” he said.

Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Umurzokov in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Umurzokov family, loved ones, and schoolmates and grieve for of his bright future.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the country's seventh most historic university with about thousands of bachelor's and 3,000 graduate students, happened during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings documented across the United States so far in the current year, according to records. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
