The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Confidence' in Youngster Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage creates Real Madrid history in a key Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to secure a last eight place.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," said the player after his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.

"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are surprised to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through local academies before joining the club's famous youth academy.

He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. My situation is positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team chase future success.

Following his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I have to earn my minutes on the field," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
