The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
Although not quite at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future free from concern.”
The event, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, donated by a first responder, was christened after the current slang trend of young people yelling “6-7” – originating from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: happy, varied, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Each year, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
