The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate souls, each with their own fears and drives. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes show the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are unique to each person."
The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one remaining could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
