The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
