Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at 81 Years Old

The world grieves the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican reggae singer and performer whose captivating vocal talent played a key role in spreading the reggae genre worldwide. The artist has died at the age of eighty-one.

“With deep sorrow that I share that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa on social media. “I am grateful for his loved ones, friends, peers in the arts and coworkers who shared his life’s path. To all his supporters around the world, please know that your encouragement was his motivation throughout his entire professional life 
 Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” The message was also signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.

Cliff was beloved for hits including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic sound and uplifting temperament brought him a large and loyal following.

In addition to his music achievements, Cliff starred in the 1972’s crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is considered a landmark of film in Jamaica.

Jimmy Cliff was one of just a handful of artists, alongside the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be awarded the esteemed Order of Merit from Jamaica.
