Former UK Soldier Accused of Murdering Kenyan Woman Appears in Courtroom
A suspect has been presented in court as extradition proceedings started in the case of Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan national, a female from Kenya who was killed near a British army base in the year 2012.
Purkiss, 38, who is originally from Greater Manchester region, showed up in Westminster magistrates court on Friday, and informed the court he planned to fight the deportation. Reports indicate that he was detained on the evening of Thursday.
A warrant for arrest for the suspect was released by a Nairobi court in the month of September. The prosecution told the Kenyan court that the individual had been facing a single count, of killing, and that the Kenyan authorities would pursue his extradition to stand trial.
The defendant served formerly as a medic with the Lancaster Regiment, the infantry regiment for the English northwest, including on missions to Afghanistan.
Agnes Wanjiru, 21, a hairdresser who had a infant daughter, disappeared after a night on the town, and her body was located 60 days later in the grounds of the hotel where she had most recently observed.
Not a single person had earlier been taken into custody or accused in relation to her passing. His detention was the result of a fresh police investigation, which came after a exposé in 2021 by a weekly publication, in which the media outlet reached out to several serving and ex-military personnel in the military group.
The investigation has been spearheaded by investigators from Kenya, which, under a bilateral security treaty, maintains prosecutorial power in the legal case.
