Federal authorities have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
